About:
I’ve been drawn to the arts since I was a child and have been working with clay for over 30 years.
When I was a teenager, I was fortunate to have a mentor, the late Bill Knoble of Red Truck Clay Works in Chestertown, NY. I studied ceramics and art education and earned a BFA from Alfred University in 2002.
After moving to Wyoming, I worked as an administrator at a nonprofit arts organization, then as an art teacher at a public school. In 2011 I moved to northern Minnesota.
In 2013, I started Wickwire Clay Works, focusing on handmade custom tile. I worked from a studio in Grand Marais for about 10 years, creating residential and commercial tile projects and teaching ceramics classes. After the pandemic, I needed to close the business in 2022. I spent some time working full-time in an office, then in 2025, made a big move to St. Paul.
Now, I have relaunched my business as Melissa Wickwire Ceramics llc and work from my home studio. I’m grateful to be focusing again on crafting tiles and working on community projects!

My work explores how handmade tile installations can influence our relationship with our built environment.
